Hip Hop is a culture and art movement that began during the late 1970s in the Bronx in New York City. Drawing from the musical heritage of New York's Caribbean immigrants, Hip Hop eventually swept the nation and then the world, becoming one of the most popular styles of music in the late 20th century to today. Although widely considered a synonym for rap music, the term Hip Hop refers to a complex culture comprised of four elements: DJing, rapping, graffiti painting, and break dancing.
